Boy From Appalachia

Boy from Appalachia © Fraser MacKenzie, 2016
He was a young man growing up wild
Playing that Appalachian style
since he was a child
His grandpa’s old guitar was his only friend
He learned how to strum
and how to pitch bend
Chicken picking fingers
rolling off the end
But it never was enough
and it never rang true
It never caught his soul
but it was all that he knew
The money that he made
strumming in the street
Bought an old valve zenith
the world was at his feet
the music that he heard
was a fiery brand of heat
He said; I’ll be the bass, I’ll be the drums, I’ll be the lead guitar
I’ll be the voice that carries everything, the backup and the star
The driving rhythm strum that carries through the song
The crying melody that makes you come along
Hey, its alright
Let the rhythm drive through you tonight
Explode, like dynamite
and there’s nothing more I need all right
Rock and roll is my life
When I met the devil at the crossroads, he offered me his soul
He said I want to play like you
I need your rock and roll
I said I won’t give you anything, you can take it you can
I’m a bonafide original,
the greatest one-man band
Some men have got the rhythm
Some have got the riffs
This boy from Appalachia
He could play all this
The sweet soul that soothes
And the power chords that rock
The metal slide on the steely strings
The sonic boom that rocks
Should have been a legend
Should have been a God
Should have been so much more than what he was
Now he’s just a memory
To those who heard him play
There’s been nothing like him from then until today
History holds no memories
Time keeps moving on
The boy from Apalachia’s story is this song
Cause he was a young man growing up wild
Playing his own style since he was a child
Hey, its alright
Let the rhythm drive through you tonight
Explode, like dynamite
and there’s nothing more I need all right
Rock and roll is my life

Nothing But Greed

Nothing but Greed © Fraser MacKenzie, 2017
She was a Summer romance
But Winter came too soon
When sunlight turns icy rain
Then darkness before noon
There’s an empty wind blowing
Through a passage-way
Like a lonely dog in a cold wet alley
Howling out my name
You got your claws in me girl
You know I gotta be free girl
You got nothing on me girl
Just a one way ticket to hell
You’re nothing but greed, lord
You’re nothing to see, lord
You’re nothing to me, lord
Let me tell you how it is
She’s nothing to see, lord
She’s nothing but greed, lord
She’s nothing to me lord
Let me tell you how it is
I found my way
To break these chains
No one left to blame
No winners in this game
Never is too soon
So I found a way to stay away from you
You and me
Let me tell you it was never meant to be now
Me and you
Are so damned through
Can’t you see
Everything I want is to be free
Let me be, oh let me be now
I found my way
To break these chains
No one left to blame
No winners in this game
Never is too soon
So I found a way to stay away from you
[solo]
I found my way
To break these chains
No one left to blame
No winners in this game
Never is too soon
So I found a way to stay away from you
You’re nothing but greed, lord
You’re nothing to see, lord
You’re nothing to me, lord
Let me tell you how it is
She’s nothing to see, lord
She’s nothing but greed, lord
She’s nothing to me lord
Let me tell you how it is

Red to Fade

Red to Fade © Fraser MacKenzie, 2016
I’ll never tell you
I’ll always hold back
You’ll never break through
and I’ll never crack
All she knows is what she’s told
She says love like a rose
Like a seed long ago
She says her love will only grow
She nurtures it
and holds on tight
She knows hate’s a pointless fight
But you hide me away and before too long
My stalk it withers, petals fall off
They tumble turn, go from red to fade
and they wrinkle and stain as they fall age
And the thorns they stay and I’m thinning out
My mouth is dry and passion drowns
and I know what love is and this aint it
cause a girl who loves me couldn’t leave me in bits
What's your story, tell me it
Is it just the same, a broken heart?
You’ve been abused
Have you been used?
You’ve been thrown out
I’ll tell you what's in my head
The cogs are broke and spin out of gear
I'll tell you whats on my mind
and you tell me what you find
Oh, a truth for a truth
A lie for a lie
I’ll tell you a story
As I close my eyes
One of my songs I’ll sing to you
One more secret broken in two
You pick me up, and you water me
Put me in the sun, babe what you see
- a seed of love, lets nourish it
or let it grow and break to bits
Oh, I entertain. It's whats I do
How I feel is second to you
In my shoes won’t you walk a mile
You’ll understand what it is just to see a smile
And the truth is we die alone
It’s a scary thought being away from home
And the truth is, babe that there's this war going on
in my head of right and wrong
And that’s the truth, we die alone
But we live together - that makes us whole
You take those things that you love of me
and you hold them tight until I leave
Then take those things you love of you
And put them into someone new
And we’re all the same and we make mistakes
and I fell in love with someone great
You’re the rose and I’m the vase
that holds your life and makes you stay
No - you’re the dirt that lets me grow
That sets me free and feeds my soul
If I were the Earth and you were the trees
And you were everything that I see
But no, I’m a rose,
I’m a rose
All alone

Knuckles © Fraser MacKenzie 2013
Oh I’ve had my taste,
I stepped outside and enjoyed the fun.
Oh what a disgrace,
I can’t reel myself back in to one.
Losing things you’ll never find
looking for them, never mind.
You try to get your way round it.
Oh how I wish I stayed,
making love and getting laid.
Instead I slipped around it.
Get your knuckles off the floor and your fingers in the door
Take everything you need and a little bit more.
Put your shield up.
Draw your sword out
Prepare yourself for war
Hear that battle shout
Lost trace, hold, embrace,
waiting for the time to chase
Instead you look to doubt it
Waiting for you to go,
the only thing you say is ‘no’
I need you. I doubt it.
Rip the saddle off the mule
Get a tank full of fuel
Moving away, start again to a place I can rule
Life, I’ll come for you
Nothing’s ever new
no matter how hard you scream about it
Everyway we think today, should we think some other way?
instead we look by it
Listening to the big voice, do we have another choice?
instead we look by it
No one will ever really care
when someone steals your chair
You can whine and cry and moan
You end up all on your own
Rip the saddle off the mule
Get a tank full of fuel
Moving away, start again to a place I can rule
Get your knuckles off the floor and your fingers in the door
Take everything you need and a little bit more.

In the darkest of my moments
The flames flickered and died
Every word you wrote to me
Is smoke beneath the sky
A match strikes alive
Bringing life to the night
There’s a sadness to this victory
Gone without a fight
When you can’t go on
And you can’t go back
The fire writes your script
And it’s the final act
This man can let it go
And I can start again
I’ve set you free to oblivion
Better times have come
Distance heals the wounds
The pages they still turn
And the fire it still burns
There’s a beauty in beginnings
As there’s a sorrow in the end
The beauty of destruction
Is rising up again
I took the feathers from a phoenix
Made them ashes in the wind
What lies beyond horizons is oblivion
Every word you wrote
And everything you see
Are now just faded memories
And unforgotten dreams
Every word I wrote
And every word I see
Are only past lovers now
And love is what I need
Everything I feel
And everything I need
My heart is on my sleeve
Come and watch me bleed
Can you see it
I can see it on you
Can you feel it
I can feel it with you
Love is all I don’t need
My twisted heart on my sleeve
Please dont watch me bleed
Into oblivion, I am oblivion.
Let our days flow behind us
Like a river of kindness
We all face the darkness alone.

It’s Friday night again
Walking down the street
Me and Sully J
Got some friends to meet
Wild boy in the alley
Dancing to the beat
Young girls on the sidewalk
Strutting, looking sweet
I dance on through it
Like a movie from my dreams
It all comes together
My favourite scene
And we don’t care, about a thing
All together, united sing
Not a thing
Not a thing
To the pounding beat
One thousand feet
To the hands raised high
To the starlit sky
This Friday night
Oh, everything’s gonna change
One moment in my life
I will never be the same
I dance on through it
Like a movie from my dreams
It all comes together
My favourite scene
And we don’t care, about a thing
All together, united sing
Not a thing
Not a thing

Vampire © Fraser MacKenzie, 2017
Alone it’s just a word don’t describe what’s inside
10 000 years behind curtains in disguise
You think you know me, you’ve only brushed my skin
Women come and go as their love grows thin
I tell you a tale too long to tell
It about this monster and how she put me in my cell
She showed me things I’d never seen before
But I can never go back to the way things were before
Oh centuries with only me since you ripped my heart above
Now I’m just a skeleton
And I dream of what I cannot hold
No more love
My blood is on the floor on the walls down to the shore all through the halls
My heart is on my sleeve, a broken steed come watch me bleed
Well its back to June and you know its soon I’ll come back through to you
And I can never go back to the way I was before
Oh centuries with only me since you ripped my heart above
Now I’m just a skeleton
And I dream of what I cannot hold
No more love
I’ll steal your heart and swindle it
I’ll tear you up in broken bits
When I fall in love it feels so wrong
To break a girl before too long
But its in my nature
To claw and scratch
To bite and rip
To walk away and never look back
It’s the way I am, it’s the way I’ll be for another who needs me
Oh centuries with only me since you ripped my heart above
Now I’m just a skeleton
And I dream of what I cannot hold
No more love
Oh I drank me a fountain of your blood and your tears
And your hopes and your fears
And you’ll die by me in reality
No more love
